How To Pack Books In 7 Simple Steps

Most of the people who are planning for a home shift don’t always give priority to packing books. Agreed packing books is relatively an easy job as compared to the packing of kitchen items and furniture. But, it still needs a little bit of planning and execution.

You don’t want your favorite books to be damaged during the transit, do you? Moving and shifting a house is a hectic task and even simple tasks can go terribly wrong!! Below are the best possible ways to pack books during home shifting.

Optimize your book collection

A single book is not as heavy as 10 books packed together. Packers and movers will change based on the distance and total shipment weight. It is very important to reduce the overall weight in all possible ways. So you need to decide whether you need to take the books to the new place or not! Choose only those which special or cherished or  rare editions etc.

Leave behind books you don’t need

There may be few books which maybe damaged or worn out, these copies may have lost their importance. You can leave it behind or give to a local recycling center. Another great way of filtration is to gift or donate any books which you won’t require in future but they could be helpful to others.

Get appropriate packing supplies

Choose the right packing material to make sure the books are not damaged during the transit. Select the proper size of boxes based on the number of books. Get appropriate packing material to pack valuable and vintage books. Finally, label the packed boxes, it will make it easy for you to access them on arrival.

Prepare book boxes in advance

Even before the actual packing of the entire house starts, you can sort and arrange books into boxes. Make sure to apply an additional layer of packing tape to the bottom of the book boxes so that it is not broken due to heavy weight.

Use soft packing material in abundance

You want to make sure the boxes arrive exactly the way you have packed them. Always pack the valuable and special edition books  individually in soft packing paper. You can arrange the books standing upright or you can just stack them one after another in the box.

Pack books in a sturdy suitcase

If you are looking for a stronger and bigger container then you can pack all your precious books in a travel suitcase with wheels. The major advantage is that you can fill it will heaviest books of your choice with worrying that they or the box will break.

Don’t overload boxes

It is better to make use of small or medium sized boxes for packing books and make sure to double-tape the seams of book boxes. Place the heaviest books on the bottom of the box and arrange it symmetrically. All this will ensure safety of books.

An Army wife’s life – bags, blogs, books and everything in between!

Today we talk to Shivani, an army wife and an army brat who runs her travel blog Hobogobo, whilst moving all over India!

How has army life treating you? If possible could you tell us about some of the places in India where you have moved to.

Army life is the only way of life that I truly know as my father was in the army as well. Having said that, contrary to most people’s belief, life as an army kid and an army wife are very different. In fact, sometimes its more difficult for an army kid to adjust to the newfound expectations after she marries an army officer.

We have been married for 5.5 years and have been posted to Ambala, Jaisalmer and Leh out of which we have setup houses in Ambala and Jaisalmer.

Which of these places have you enjoyed the most and why?

I enjoyed both places equally as we got a chance to stay together for a couple of months. Ambala was a great city to start a ‘grahisti’ owing to its wholesale plastic market and export surplus home furnishing shops. Jaisalmer is a tourist destination where you can sample cuisines from all over the world in the tourist season. Fancy, Korean food? Worry not, Jaisalmer has an authentic Korean restaurant run by a Korean lady !

How many times have you moved house since you married?

In 5.5 years, I have moved and setup 3 houses not counting all the in-between scenarios where we have moved for courses and where my parents and in laws houses have been my abode for several months. Mind you, in setting up these 3 houses, we have managed to stay together only for about a year.

Have you been able to keep in touch with friends made along the way?

Yes, I believe in making friends for life. In todays age of telecommunication, social media and whatsapp, there is no excuse for you to not keep in touch. Moreover, the army is one big family in a small world, you keep meeting each other at courses and get togethers.

How does it feel living this “nomad” kind of life? How different is it from everyone else’s? Which one would you have preferred?

It has its ups and downs. I love travelling so I take it in my stride but there are sacrifices that one must make. Staying together for not even 1/5th of the times you’ve been married says a lot about the nomadic life we live. The heart might grow fonder but the brain definitely stresses out.

Moreover, there is a lot of uncertainty in plans which makes it difficult for the wife to live away and have a 5 year or even a 5 month plan for that matter. Having said that, not everyone in the army lives like that. I know quite a few families that have managed to stay together all their lives after getting married.

Military life is completely different from anyone else’s. 90% of times it’s in someone else’s hand- you don’t make the decisions, the buck doesn’t stop at you. All you can do is plan and wait for the plan to be foiled, then plan again and again till something happens. Experience has taught me to have a plan A, B, C & D.

About preference, I know no other life so will not comment. Different lifestyles have their unique challenges and most often than not, the grass only seems greener on the other side. I believe in living life in the moment rather than mulling over what could have been ! Que sera sera.

For how long have you been blogging? How did you begin blogging? Please share your journey – ups and downs.

I first started blogging in 2010 where it was just a personal blog with both travel and personal articles. It was mainly for the consumption of friends or to share travel information with people who asked. Serious blogging started in 2012 where I separated my travel blog to Hobogobo and everything else to ShivaniGarg.co

I started my career in advertising and them moved on to a digital startup where I handled everything from copywriting to graphics to sometimes interacting with clients directly. I learned wordpress and website designing on the job and then added SEO to my skill set. Once I got married and shifted bases I used the knowledge for my own blogging endeavours and here I am !

travelling moving house

Your genre of blogging is travelling. How did you decide this niche?

HoboGobo specifically caters to the travel niche and this was something that came very naturally to me. Photography and travelling is a my life’s chi (qi). It focuses my energies and makes me alive. The term ‘HOBOGOBO’ is also an amalgamation of these two passions – travel and photography where a ‘hobo’ is a nomad or someone who is location independent like me and ‘gobo’ is a device used it photography to control light.

So many army wives are becoming authors/bloggers why do you think this trend is picking up?

No lemonade taste as good as the one made from the lemons that life gives you and no one knows that better than the Army wife. Apart from the fact, that being an Author or Blogger gives you a chance to work remotely, I think an army wife has so many different experiences and interactions with local people of the little towns she moves to as well as the officers and wives around her from all over India. My experience has taught me that while everyone is so different from each other, we all feel the same emotions and are the same people, really ! As an author, I can put that understanding to great use.

An army wife is resourceful. She has nothing but problems around her and no magic wand to solve them so it’s natural that she becomes a problem solver. She plans, budgets, orders, tries, opines, inspires and shares her experiences with others in the same boat. This is exactly what a blogger does ! A blogger is a thought / activity leader who is one of the first to try things and share their experiences to either inspire or caution others. So there you have it, an army life teaches you all these things and some of us put these to use as authors and bloggers.

Does packing, moving and unpacking still seem like a daunting task to you?

I am an army brat before being an army wife so packing, moving and unpacking has never been a daunting task for me. In fact, I handled the whole task in our first home after getting married as my husband had no time ! He still hears about it because in fact, it’s his job and not mine. But since the first time and after having shifted so many houses, I let him do the dirty work most of the times 😉

Before learning about EZMove, how did you choose a particular Packers and movers? How has your experience been with them? Would you be willing to try EZMove for your next move?

We are pretty efficient at packing by ourselves so I have not been able to use the services of packers and movers other than one time when we called them to pack our fridge and ac. It was a local packer and mover and we could have done a better job. I have also heard about horror stories of Agarwal packers and movers smuggling drugs in the truck that had the stuff of an Air Force officer.

I could definitely try EZMove especially after a 6 month old taking up most of my time now. But in order to do that, you will have to show me your trial services as I’m quite wary of Packers & Movers.

Do you have any funny anecdote or hilarious moving story?

Oh I have so many but I’ll choose to share this particular one, in the hope that someone who matters will read it 😉
In the past 5.5 years, I have set up homes twice in the same station as my husband and stayed in each house for 4-5 months ! In the 4.5 years that we have stayed away, we have not been given a separated family accommodation because I am a Delhi girl and Delhi area feels we are way too independent to require one (sniggers sarcastically). So anyways, the only option I had was to rent a civil house or stay with parents, I chose the former even though the rent was 25K and the HRA one gets is 9K (what many people do not know is that one pays tax on the HRA as well).

So all in all, it’s pretty hilarious to realise that an army wife is sometimes expected to pay a big price to both stay with and without the husband!

“Ek taraf kuan, to doosri taraf khai”. That’s the army life in a nutshell.

Lastly, since you are a moving pro, could you share a few tips or tricks with our readers?

Start the process a month before you intend to shift. Make lists in your head about the things you need till the end, and what can go right now. Usually, its the kitchen that gets packed in the end and the home decor that goes first. Line your boxes with waterproof material because sometimes you dont know after how long they are going to be opened. Source and sun dry some neem leaves to line your carpets and other linen to prevent pests.

Loved Shivani’s candid views! We at EZmove, wish her all the best for her blogging journey!

How to shift home, when relocating within the same city

Shifting belongings from one house to another in the same city may not be a very difficult process when we compare it with shifting to totally a new city. But, shifting within the city also involves lot of planning and preparation. It should be executed as carefully as major damage can happen!

Below are the things to be kept in mind before moving within the same city.

Before finalizing a professional moving company cross check thoroughly their credentials, in order to avoid problems. You can visit the professional moving company’s website online – go through the customer’s testimonies. You will come to know the way the company deals with after sales services as well.

moving day mistakes

5 moving day mistakes to avoid for a hassle free relocation

To err is human, but making mistakes on moving day can burn a big hole in your pocket. Don’t just survive, moving day – own it! And here are some tips which will help you during the day when tension is running high and tempers are running short!

5 moving day mistakes to avoid for a hassle free relocation

Being way behind your packing schedule

In spite of all the checklists, you’ve seen and downloaded and made – the one thing many people forget to account for is the amount of time it will take to pack up and move house. What first time movers and sometimes, even veterans don’t realize is that – it requires some amount of prep time before you get into the groove where you can pack in a jiffy! Deluding yourself with thoughts like “Oh! I can just dump them in a box and they’ll reach safely” is the perfect recipe for headaches on the D-day!

To avoid leaving packing for the final moving day, here are a couple of pointers

  • Before you begin packing make a timeline – FOLLOW IT.
  • Begin packing as soon as you finalize a packers and movers.
  • Begin packing from the areas in your home that are the hardest to sort out and pack.
  • Don’t leave any packing for the last minute

Forget to pack an essentials box

Most people, who don’t plan a move properly, end up not packing an essentials box – which really comes in handy when you begin to settle down at the new place!

Fresh change of clothes, medicines, toiletries, tool box, some packets of food and other sundry items, which are most essential when moving house.

So think of all the items that you will not be able to survive without for even a day and include them in your moving day survival box. Just so you don’t forger, put it on your checklist.

Leaving “quick” tasks for the morning

D-day is the most unpredictable day when moving home or office. Anything that can go wrong – may go wrong! Packing is tough and maybe after doing it for a couple of days, you’ll be tempted to leave a few quick jobs for later! You’ll convince yourself, that you’ll get up early and they’re no harm in this! You couldn’t be more wrong!

Don’t leave anything for the last minute as your alarm may fail to go off or the packers and movers may show up earlier, or you may just not be feeling too well! Everything is unpredictable! So, stay ahead of the curve, by completing all the quick tasks before hand!

Turning your back on moving day safety

The best piece of advice anyone can give you – is to stay safe during that roller coaster of 24 hours when moving home.

Babies, small children and pets – have a knack of getting into dangerous situations. Make sure they stay away from all the madness. Designate a family member to look after them in a safe place – away from it all. You too will be less distracted when you know they are one hundred percent safe.

Don’t block the paths and hallways, as they were would be a lot of footfalls – and someone may trip. Drop the frills and dress in tracks so that you’re comfortable on your feet.

Handing over your valuables to the movers

Many Indians keep some amount of jewellery at home. Despite all the preparations and planning, last minute goof ups can happen and you may just have loaded all your “khandani” jewels into a truck – and before you realize it – it’s pulled out of your driveway! Even important documents along with other valuables should always be carried in person.

Avoid the above mistakes and you should have a relatively hassle free day! Look on the bright sight! New house, new place– new possibilities!  Cheer up, because moving day is round the corner and it will all be over soon!

how to unpack

How to unpack and organize after you’re done moving

So, you’ve survived moving day! But troubles aren’t over yet, are they? You still have to unpack all your belongings and settle down, right? How and where to begin, when your new home looks like a warehouse!

Logically, you should unpack and prepare the rooms according to importance! Pretty simple!

Start with the Bedroom

What would you crave after an exhausting day of loading, unloading and dealing with the stress of moving – a place to sleep! When you feel as drained as your phone battery – is there any reason to have second thoughts about unpacking the bedroom!

Don’t fret about unpacking your actual bed, if it’s getting late – just flop your mattresses on the floor and cover with a clean bedsheet! Never underestimate the power of sleeping on clean sheets!!

Next is obviously the Kitchen

If you can do it simultaneously – great! Else it is best to finish of the bedroom and head straight for the kitchen!

Kitchen is obviously a priority as even soon as you feel exhausted you need to grab a bite or a glass of refreshing cold water! Focus on the essentials first and get out your stove or a hot plate. After you’re done unpacking the utensils, get some staple grains like dals and rice in a couple of boxes – so that cooking can commence.

Appliances can wait – bit if absolutely must set up your mixer grinder, refrigerator and oven. Toasters and other small appliances can be opened and set up as the unpacking progresses.

Bathroom

Well, assuming that the basic bathroom setup would already be existing – you would just need to unpack your essentials bag. Getting your toothbrush, toothpaste and soap in place – will help save your sanity in the morning!

Dining Area

After your kitchen and bathroom are set up, you can think of setting up your dining area so that you have a place to sit down to eat! Having a dining table in place – really helps to make the house come together!

Drawing room

Yes, it’s obviously the last priority as who has time to relax and lounge around when a house is to be unpacked! Setting up your entertainment centre, and sofas will make you feel that finally the house has begun to look like a home!

Storage area

Keep moving everything that you don’t really need to the storage area your new house. Store away any trunks and boxes which you feel will come useful the next time you consider a move.

Packing and moving has a deadline – so people tend to be more organized! But, unpacking can be laid back – so much so that people can take over a month to finally settle in.

While it is advisable to take a slow pace, don’t keep putting it off out of laziness. Once the house is fully set up then only can you begin to feel that you are settling in into your new life!

Here are a couple of pointers which should help to make your unpacking easier:

  • If it is going to take two minutes, just do it! Do not put off for tomorrow what you can do today.
  • If you have labeled the boxes, then first place all the boxes in their respective rooms.
  • Be sure to dispose of packing materials properly. Sometimes the workers themselves are willing to take them away so resell. Someone’s trash is another’s treasure!
  • Don’t forget to clean up on a regular basis as the dust from all the boxes can tend to accumulate.

Hope you found these tips helpful! In case you are looking for packers and movers, do think of getting a quote from EZMove.in.

Moving a dog by train

Moving your pet by Indian Railways

As mentioned in our previous post Planning to Move Your Pet by Airways, today we will talk about moving pets by trains.

Moving a dog by train is quite simple and comfortable. Following are the documents that you will require before moving your dog:

  • Dog’s vaccination records
  • Fit to travel certificate from a vet
  • Your dog’s license

Dogs can travel with you in First AC. The caveat here is that you need to have two berths in your name. So, if you are travelling alone – book two tickets in your name itself. If you have family or a partner along then that’s a ticket for each of you, which will suffice.

On reaching the station, head straight to the baggage counter. There they will book your dog as “extra baggage” for a fee. The fee is calculated based on the weight of your dog and the distance of travel. This fee usually varies between 600 to 1000 Rs.

You will not be able to pay this luggage fare until the train chart is prepared which is about two hours before the train leaves the station.

In First AC there are two types of compartments or coupes – one with only two berths and the other with four.

If you are lucky enough to get a two berth coupe – then enjoy a trouble free journey with your dog! Get down at stations, let him take a stroll and enjoy his favorite pass time – sniffing everything on the platform!

ProTip: It is possible to request a 2 seater coupe from the Commercial Manager – Passenger Reservations.

Just try to ensure that your dog doesn’t get loose, causing trouble for fellow passengers. They are within their legal right to ask for your dog to be removed. Other than that, you are good to go!

If you have seats in a four berth coupe – your fellow passengers should not object to the dog, otherwise he will have to be moved to a box in the luggage or brake van.

If this happens, leave your dog in the brake van with food and water. You could go and check on him at intervals. Please be aware that the box provided in the brake van wouldn’t be clean or very comfortable, so it would be wise to check it out before the journey begins. If unclean, request the railway staff to clean it. They are also amenable to taking care of your pet during the journey if you pay them a little.

Please remember that all this valid for all trains except Rajdhani trains. No pets are allowed on Rajdhani trains.

Please do not attempt to move your pet in other compartments of the train, for you will be:

  • Fined for all unbooked pets.
  • The TT can ask you to de-board if the unbooked pets create trouble for other travellers.

Indian railways is dog friendly, however the same cannot be said for our feline friends. Cats are not considered pets – but wild animals! Horses, cows, donkeys, sheep, goats and even camels are welcome aboard our railways – but not cats.

You will need a certificate from the Department of Wildlife, Government of Delhi, that your cat isn’t a wild animal. Besides this you need the standard vaccination records as well a fit to travel from a vet.

In case you have any questions, feel free to drop that in comments! Are you planning a move with a pet? Do read our next blog for Tips and Tricks for travelling with Pets!

Planning to move your pet by airways

Planning a move is always stressful for the entire family, more so for the young ones. However, the one group of people for whom the move is inexplicably difficult is our pets. For their world just became topsy-turvy – with unknown men coming in and packing up their dog house/litter along with their toys and treats.

With airlines in India having different rules, it is better to plan their move along with yours, so that there are no unpleasant surprises. There are only two major airlines Air India and Jet Airways which allow you to bring your pet along. While SpiceJet and Vistara also do allow pets their routes are currently limited.

If you have decided to transport your pet via airways, please read the following carefully to avoid last minute hassles.

Requirement for carriage of pets:

Please ensure that you have the following documents for transporting your pet, be it a dog, cat, bird or rabbit as checked–in baggage or cargo.
• A fitness certificate from a vet.
• Vaccination records.
• For transporting birds and rabbits, a letter from the State Forest or Wildlife department is required that the species of bird or rabbit is not endangered.
• The crate for your pet should be an IATA-approved cage. This ensures that it has enough space to lie down, stand and turn around.

Protip: You may like to purchase the crate in advance so that it gives a chance for your pet to become accustomed to, ensuring a more comfortable journey.

Besides meeting the above requirements, different airlines have different regulations – so it is best to iron these out so that the D-day goes without hang-ups
.

• Pet animals can be carried as an accompanied baggage or shipped as Cargo – for both however, the pet in transported in the cargo hold only. For both booking has to be made separately atleast 72 hours in advance.

• Booking travel for an “unaccompanied” pet is only done through the airlines cargo office. Also such travel is possible only on direct flights and not connecting flights.

• If you are bringing your pet along, only Air India allows pets in the cabin only if the combined weight of the pet and the carrier are less than 5 kilos. If your pet is above 5 kg, it needs to be checked in.

• Pregnant pets, unweaned litters and pets below the age of 8 weeks are not accepted for travel.

• Call in to make the reservation for your pet because it cannot be done on the phone. There is a limit to how many pets the airline can take on each flight, so find out in advance if there is space for your pet.

All said and done air travel is an expensive way to move your pet. You may also like to consider train travel, which we will cover in our next post Moving your pet by Indian Railways.

Hidden cost frauds – Companies lure customers providing a great to sound invoice and then hikes the price before delivery saying these are hidden cost unmentioned in the initial estimate

Collecting deposit and vanishing – Companies keep deposit before providing a certain solution but do not come up to provide the service. As a consumer, you should not provide any upfront since it is enough to understand for the moving company that your items are with them, so why they need any cash in advance
